About IV Sedation
Are you intimated or anxious when considering oral surgery? Pure Dental Specialists is proud to offer intravenous (IV) sedation to help our Dallas, TX patients feel at ease during their oral surgery procedures. IV sedation can be used on most patients and involves the use of anti-anxiety medications that are delivered directly to your veins for fast and effective relief. This method of sedation dentistry allows you to feel completely comfortable and relaxed during your procedure while you remain awake and able to respond to simple commands. Board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Matthew Krieger is certified to utilize IV sedation, tailored to the needs of the individual patient to ensure optimal safety. To learn more about sedation dentistry, schedule a consultation at Pure Dental Specialists.
Candidates for IV sedation could be almost anyone who suffers from anxiety, nervousness, or fear related to dental treatments. IV sedation is considered low-risk when administered by a board-certified oral surgeon. However, the presence of certain health conditions or the use of some medications can affect your candidacy. Dr. Krieger will obtain your medical history and assess your unique situation before deciding if IV sedation is safe for you. There are factors outside of anxiety or dental phobia that may also make you an ideal candidate for the use of IV sedation, including:
- Strong gag reflex
- Physical limitations
- Chronic jaw pain
- Inability to remain still
What to Expect
To administer IV sedation, Dr. Krieger or an experienced member of the Pure Dental Specialists team will insert a small needle into your vein before releasing the medication. Most patients begin to feel the effects of the anti-anxiety solution within minutes. Dr. Krieger will initiate and complete your dental procedure while monitoring your IV levels, to ensure you remain comfortable and safe. As soon as the procedure is complete, the IV will be removed, allowing you to feel awake and alert shortly after.
It is advised that you do not drive for at least 24 hours following IV sedation. You should arrange for someone to pick you up from our office and take you home. You may feel tired for the rest of the day, so we recommend that you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and rest if at all possible. In some cases, you could become nauseous or experience memory loss. These side effects will typically diminish within a day of receiving the sedation. If you experience any abnormalities or your symptoms persist, you should contact our office immediately.
The Pure Dental Approach
IV sedation or twilight sedation relaxes you completely while you undergo the dental care you need. Some patients even describe drifting in and out of a wonderful, magical sleep while not feeling any pain or anxiety. In fact, no matter if you are having wisdom teeth removed or titanium screws implanted, you won’t feel any pain and may not even remember the procedure.
IV sedation is very safe. And because the sedation is administered and monitored by Dr. Krieger, a board-certified oral surgeon, you avoid the expense of an operating room or a same-day surgical facility.
